European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
