Australia's chief selector George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
