American Attack on Venezuela Raises Anxieties of Potential Greenland Annexation.

The latest American military action in the South American nation and the seizure of its president have renewed unease regarding America's ambitions on the Arctic territory. Followers of the ex-president's political movement have reportedly turned their attention to the strategically important island in the wake of the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Provocative Posts and Diplomatic Outrage

Merely hours after the initiation of the Venezuelan campaign, a prominent conservative podcaster, who is married to a high-ranking White House adviser, posted a symbolic map. The picture depicted Greenland covered in the American flag, with the single-word message: "SOON."

This overt suggestion to claim the mineral-rich region, which is a part of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered swift and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"Denmark and the US are strong partners and should continue to cooperate as such. American security is equally the Arctic's and our security," declared the Copenhagen's envoy to the United States. "The Kingdom of Denmark and the US collaborate to guarantee security in the Arctic."

The ambassador additionally highlighted that the kingdom had significantly boosted its defence spending recently, earmarking a large sum expressly for Northern and regional defence. "Furthermore, we demand full recognition for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark," he emphasized.

Administrative Appointments and Geopolitical Interests

The situation were additionally exacerbated by the recent appointment of a US state governor as a special envoy to Greenland. The governor had publicly thanked the commander-in-chief, saying it was an "honour" to work in a volunteer capacity to "make Greenland a part of the US."

Following the events in Venezuela, this envoy commended the administration's actions, linking it to the broader "fight against narcotics."

Ever since returning to office, the US president has consistently alarmed European partners with his stated interest in Greenland. The island is considered vitally important for defence and potential mineral exploitation. It currently hosts the most northerly US military base.

Leaving the Door Open to Military Action

In a significant television appearance, the president declined to rule out the resorting to armed action to acquire Greenland. This stance comes amid intensifying great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He described Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll look after, and we’ll cherish them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Tensions and Local Resistance

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of intent, Denmark's intelligence service took the extraordinary step last month of classifying the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland delivered a unified and stern rebuke: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You must not annex other countries."

Surveys in Greenland shows a complex picture. While a overwhelming percentage of the island's inhabitants desire self-rule from Denmark, there is simultaneously little to no appetite to join the United States. The island has had the option to seek sovereignty for over a decade.

Expert Assessment: A Plausible Threat?

Some experts are now re-evaluating the likelihood of such a move. One policy director specializing in military analysis conceded she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to station a few hundred or a few thousand soldiers inside of Greenland, and it's unclear to me who could do anything about it," she concluded.
